Calamari appetizer paint

I love calamari appetizers but often when you order one you can see the grease from them being deep fried. My Calamari Steak Appetizer is a lighter version and you can use whole wheat panko bread crumbs or gluten free breadcrumbs in order to fit your dietary needs. I make it dairy free by using cashew milk in place of regular milk and use olive oil to saute it. And serve it with my homemade mayonnaise or tartar sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Calmari Steaks (thawed if frozen)
  • Bread Crumbs of your choice (Panko work great and they have a whole grain version or your fave gluten free)
  • 1/2 cup Milk (I use cashew milk for non dairy version)
  • 1 egg
  • Your choice of spices: I like a few grinds each of  Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning, and black pepper (I tend to add little to no salt when seasoning fish)
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil plus more if needed.

Directions:

Rinse calamari steaks.

Preheat pan over medium heat and add olive oil.

Whisk egg and milk in a bowl and add a couple grinds of spices.

Place bread crumbs on plate and add a few grinds of spices mix into bread crumbs.

Dip each calamari steak in egg mix and then cover in breading.

Place in pan and cook about 5 minutes check to make sure its browned and flip over. Cook another 5 minutes on each side. If steaks look dry add a little more oil and cook another 30 seconds on that side.

Remove from pan and serve with fresh lemon and your choice of dipping sauce I like to use my homemade mayonnaise with extra lemon.
